Rose’s side table

Rose’s side table

I once went on a trip to one of my wood sources with a great friend of mine, Rose. We had cutting boards on the mind, looking for some maple to contrast with some walnut that I had. We ultimately found the maple that I used in this table. Christmas was coming up this year and I pulled that piece of maple out and decided I just couldn’t make it into a cutting board. Then grain was too pretty to let knives dig into it for years.
Like most people, next to her couch sits a table for drinks and remotes and whatnot. She’s quite the book reader so I often notice a stack of books taking up half the space on said side table. I decided she needed a better side table, with some sort of book storage function.
I thought it might be neat to make some sort of cradle, that held the books underneath the table top, but still displayed the books. My thought was that she could keep all the books she that she hadn’t read yet, there in the table, and pull them as needed.
I finished the table with a few coats of teak oil, followed by some paste wax mainly to give the top a nice slick feel.
